November 2017 Newsletter

We are all well settled into the Autumn term and ready to update you with news.

Thank you to all who came to our settling in meetings just before half term and engaged so well in our whole school Art theme 'Up, up and away' .

The children were developing this theme across the curriculum during the week, and there is some fabulous creative writing (which will shortly be on St Mary's Blog) on 'UP'.

The art aspect was particularly creative-thank you Mrs Bee, and aimed to develop technique of colour, pattern, texture, line, shape,  form and space, through to improving skills of sculpture using varied materials.

Our hall looked amazing with 24 helium balloons all with an 'inspiration' attached, designed to get everyone sculpting, using the huge range of boxes and other waste materials

collected by you! Thank you!

We wanted to try something completely original and were delighted with the outcome, with some fantastically engaged parents  and some amazing work from children.

 Thank you

You told us, we listened:-

In response to parent/ carer feedback for insight into strategies to help their child's learning…

Unravelling the complexities of the English Curriculum;

Grammar & Spelling Workshops-led by Miss Parkin and some willing Class 4 volunteers.

If you missed 'grammar' on the 19th October, there is still 'spelling' on Monday 6 November at 3.45pm.

Reading

At St Mary's we have looked very closely at our reading.  Whilst our children achieve very well, with results usually above national, we continually look at ways to improve.  One aspect on which we are particularly focussing is extracting meaning from reading - or comprehension, inference and deduction.

The demands of the curriculum means children must not only be able to read the words, but also have a good grasp of these skills in order to reach higher levels.  Additionally reading clearly unlocks so many aspects of learning.

Mrs Sambrook is trialling a new session in KS1.  'Stay & Read' on Wednesday mornings 8.50-9.20am.

Parents/carers in Class 2 are invited to stop and read with their child and also have the opportunity to observe a guided reading session in which phonics, keyword recognition and semantics at sentence construction are taught.

Maths

Look out for our ever popular Maths workshops - focussing on how calculations are now taught in schools.

Sports

We have been taking part in lots of tournaments & festivals over the past few weeks

We reached the Tag Rigby Finals representing Newark & Sherwood, we have also played 3 football matches against Farmilo, Keyworth and Birklands Primary schools, and entered the district schools cross country event held at Berry Hill Park in Mansfield.

What has pleased us most has been the conduct of St Mary's pupils-we are all learning to work as a team and to celebrate appropriately whether we win or lose.

One of our main sporting objectives is developing good attitudes -resilience  when things are not going in our favour and graciousness always.

WELL DONE to you all-and to Mr Wathall who coaches and coaxes with such skill! Thank you.

After School Clubs

Football may have finished but now we are offering a change…  If you are in KS2, come and try Active After School Club, Trampolining @ Dukeries and Golf @ Rufford.  Mr Wathall has more information

regarding these

Breakfast Club & After School Club

WELCOME to our new After School Playworker Louisa Bainbridge who joins our school family from this half term.

As both clubs are flourishing, can you please ensure places are booked beforehand and payments are made promptly to secure your place as we would hate to disappoint parents if we are unable to provide the childcare on the day.

Please remember the dedicated phone number when collecting your child/ren 07483 102617 - everyone collecting your child/ren will need this number.

Please do not turn up to breakfast club having not booked as places are limited!

REMINDERS

Its getting chilly, please ensure your child has a coat in school (named).

The lights on the drive are still being installed following the disaster in the summer, when one was knocked over.  If it's dark, and you are leaving by the front entrance, please press the big button on the left of the door - it is on an 8 minute timer, and should guide your path into the carpark.

Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the school site.  This NCC rule includes the drive, the path and definitely the playground.

Thank you for your co-operation with this.
