Inportant School Information
Hello and welcome: Spring term is now well underway and Christmas is a distant memory BUT… we would still like to wish you all a "Happy New Year" in our first 2017 newsletter.
This term we are welcoming two student teachers Miss Bailey and Miss Warren. They are working with our teachers and children in Classes 2 & 3 and we wish them both a very successful placement and enjoyable time at St Marys.
We also welcome Carson, Leo, Etta and Katie into our EYFS as part time pupils. We are so pleased to have you as part of our school family.
We have lots of learning planned for this term. You will find all the information about the curriculum your child is following on our website at: www.st-maryscofe.notts.sch.uk/
This is in addition to the termly "what's happening in our class this term" letter. We hope in this way parents feel well informed about what their child is working on. Additionally, we would stress that we want positive partnerships with our parents. If you have a concern we are usually available for a quick word before the school day starts. For a longer chat please aim for afterschool, or by making an appointment with the teacher. We can usually respond to you on the telephone during lunchtimes or break times if that is more convenient for you. Whatever though… please do not worry on your own (or on social media!!) about something that we can address together.
Sporting News: A massive "well done" to the boys that took part in the recent Futsal Tournament. With the Young Voices event being held on the same evening, it left our year 3 & 4 squad a little depleted. But our strength in depth, for such a small school was clearly shown as four Year 2 boys were brought into the squad and played magnificently. All showed great promise and gained valuable experience from the competition.
Sports Hall Athletics: A tremendous performance at the Dukeries Academy saw our sports hall athletes win the Dukeries Family Tournament and qualify to represent The Dukeries in the District Finals which are being held on Tuesday 31st January at Newark Academy. Performing a range of running, throwing and jumping events, our children came out on top of the four schools taking part. A great team ethos was evident throughout this achievement, which will give us a boost in confidence that we can take with us into the district finals. Final places (lowest score wins) St Marys 31; King Edwin 45; Park Gate Academy 49 and St Josephs 55.
Newark & Sherwood Cross Country Competition: The N & S cross country team competition held at Southwell Minster was a huge success for our runners. We took a small, but competitive squad of boys and girls and in the team event finished a fantastic 4th and 3rd position in the boys and girls races respectively. We also had 3 children qualify to represent N&S district team in the county competition which is to be held on Saturday 4th February at Wollaton Hall for finishing in the top 12. Huge congratulations to Keelie, Elicia and Max on their achievement and good luck in the county races!
Some Important Dates: There are two INSET days lined up for the coming months:
Monday 20th February - Staff will be undertaking training for their curriculum co-ordinator roles - so you can have an additional day added to the half term holiday!
Friday 26th May - Staff will be working on assessment and progress priorities.
LIFESAVERS, schools savings club: As you will all have heard, this year we are delighted to be taking part in the LifeSavers programme, helping our pupils learn about money and how to manage it wisely. The savings club will provide real life, hands-on money experiences for our children to develop into financially confident young people. They will learn about saving and setting savings target for thing they want. The emphasis will not be on the amount they save but the development of positive savings habits. All amounts saved, no matter how small, will be welcomed.
If your child wishes to join the savings club, kindly complete and return the application form which was sent out earlier this week. We hope lots of our children will want to take part in the savings club, and if you or your child has any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
PARENTS MEETINGS with teachers will take place on the 6th & 8th March. If you have already met with your child's teacher during the previous weeks (beginning 20th & 27th February) there should be NO NEED to attend an additional meeting on the 6th or the 8th March.
Car parking at the start and end of the school day. Please, please, please park your car with diligence at pick up and drop off times. This includes making sure that parking is safe when children are coming in/out of the main entrance and from the path to the Forest Corner car park. Please ensure that there is no prospect of your car encroaching the drives of our neighbours and local residents. Thank you.
Class 3 are being joined by The Partake Theatre Company later this term to learn all about the Ancient Egyptians. They will be discovering the mysteries of a burial ceremony by recreating the scents and aromas of the time; investigating and handling artefacts used in mummification; learning about the clothing and make-up an Egyptian princess would wear and creating a cartouche! Keep an eye on the school blog for information on how the day went!
